Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) Demonstrates Energy Storage

On Thursday June 28th, SMUD hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony in one of the nation’s first distributed energy storage projects to go on line.  John Frederick of Silent Power attended along with other project partners and local and state officials.

Silent Power’s OnDemand Energy Appliance utilizing Saft lithium ion batteries is installed in fifteen homes.  The project is part of a $5.9 million DOE grant where the primary objective of the 24-month pilot project is to examine how the integration of energy storage can be used to enhance the value of distributed PV resources.  In simple terms, the project was designed to measure the value of matching solar production with peak demand.  Solar production peaks during mid day sun and peak demand occurs some time after that.  The participant mentions how he’s saving money by “shifting” the solar energy through storage.
